Mrs. Margaret J. Eckard, wife of George W. Eckard, died at the family home in Freedom township, four miles west of East Freedom at five minutes past midnight, Christmas night. She had been in failing health for several years and her death did not come unexpectedly.
Mrs. Eckard was a daughter of William and Katie Ann Shaw, pioneer residents of Freedom township, near Puzzletown, and was aged 79 years, 9 months and 11 days. She was twice married. Her first husband, Samuel Langham, a veteran of the Civil war, died soon after he was discharged from the service. There were three sons, William who died several years ago, Samuel R. of Hollidaysburg and Frank A. of Leamersville.
She later united in marriage with George W. Eckard with whom she happily lived until the final call came. She is survived, in addition to the sons named, by her husband, several sisters and a number of step-children.
She was for many years a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren. The funeral services will be held on Saturday forenoon, leaving the house at 1 o'clock.
Services will be in charge of her life long friend and pastor, Elder James A. Sell of Hollidaysburg and will be conducted in the church at Carson Valley, interment in the adjoining cemetery.
