Another Good Man Gone: Mr Ira Smith, of West Point, whose illness we have mentioned before, died at his home in that town on Wednesday morning last, of pneumonia, a result we feared when we first heard of his illness, for he was scarcely recovered from a previous long and severe sickness. He was a man who rightly enjoyed the respect, esteem and implicit confidence of all who knew him, and his cordial greeting and hearty hand shake will be missed by many an old friend who shall pass an afternoon in our busy streets and not see Mr Smith among the people as in the years past. He is another man who has taken the Valley News from the start, never allowing a year to go by without at least seeing the editor about it and arranging for payment either in cash or produce just as good as cash. As the time of his last settlement, he seemed to feel that it might be his last, but said nothing about stopping the paper, but that he would see us when the time came round if all went on as usual.
He was a friend whom we felt we could rely on, and although as wide apart as could be in politics our personal relations were always of the warmest kind, and when he subscribed for the other paper he did not deem it necessary to stop the old one, as a good many other of his brother democrat did.
He was a good man and his memory will long live fresh and green in the hearts of his neighbors and those who knew him well in all the walks of life. We hope for an obituary notice for our next issue.
