Mrs. Bernard Belling, 74, of 231 E. Mill St., passed away at St. Joseph's hospital at 8:45 Sunday night after a car accident earlier in the evening which occurred in the 100 block on East Davis St. Her daughter, Mrs. Leroy Broome, 41, of 804 S. University Ave., was injured in the mishap, reportedly not seriously.

The accident which resulted in fatal injuries to Mrs. Belling occurred at 7:29 p.m. Sunday, on the street in front of the W. F. Pfarrer home, 106 E. Davis St. Mrs. Broome had been driving the car and had parked it on the north side of the street, facing east, with the gear in neutral but with the engine running.

Mrs. Broome alighted from the car first and was holding the door open for Mrs. Belling to slide over on the seat and get out on the same side. As Mrs. Belling was making this maneuver it is believed she accidentally pulled the gear shift lever into the low or drive position, and at the same time her foot was pressing the accelerator down, causing the car to shoot forward.

At this time Mrs. Broome tried to get into the car but was unable to do so, being thrown to the pavement by the force of the moving car, receiving skinned elbows and body bruises. The car, with Mrs. Belling in it, continued on down the street, crossing to the south side and striking a tree in front of the C. T. Marks home, 113 E. Davis St. The car was a total wreck.

The police and fire departments were called to the scene, responding with a squad car and the rescue truck. Mrs. Belling, who had sustained a fractured elbow and hip and internal injuries, was conveyed to the hospital in the rescue truck.

Mrs. Broome then went to the home of her sister, Mrs. W. F. Pfarrer, who conveyed her also to St. Joseph's Hospital. Her condition was such that she did not require hospitalization.

Dr. O. F. Goetsch, Hustisford, Dodge county coroner, investigated the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Belling's death, classifying it "death by accident." He stated that there would be no formal inquest.

Funeral services for Mrs. Belling will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic church with interment in St. Peter's cemetery. Rev. Raymond Miller will officiate. A vigil will be held at the Briese Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3:30 p.m. Tuesday until the hour of the church services on Wednesday. She was a member of the Christian Mothers; the Altar Society; Third Order of St. Francis; Daughters of Isabella, and of St. Joseph's Hospital Service Club.

Born at Lake Mills on Dec. 8, 1884, the late Mrs. Belling was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dietz and had made her home in Beaver Dam the greater part of her life. She was married on Oct. 16, 1906, to Barney Belling, who passed away in 1954. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Wm. Bauer, and one grandchild.

Surviving are a son, Eugene, and four daughters, Mrs. Felix (Evelyn) Budde, Mrs. Walter (Margaret) Pfarrer, Mrs. Leroy (Lucille) Broome, and Mrs. Donald (Geraldine) Bartell, and a brother, George Dietz, all of Beaver Dam; and 21 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

The death of Mrs. Belling was the first traffic crash fatality in Beaver Dam since the death of Alvin Marthaler on May 3, 1954. The last pedestrian death was that of Vicki Barnett, 2, who was struck and killed by a car while on the street in front of her home, 1016 Lawndale Dv., on June 8, 1956.
