Medical Pioneer. He was responsible for developing key ideas and methods for diagnosing diseases of the skin under the microscope. Dr. Ackerman, educated at Princeton, Columbia University, and Harvard University, began his career at the University of Miami, later at New York University, Philadelphia, and, finally, at the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology in New York City. Dr. Ackerman revolutionized the field of Dermatopathology by developing the "pattern method" for the diagnosis of inflammatory skin diseases as well as solid neoplasms, such as melanoma. Dr. Ackerman was also a tireless advocate for truthful testimony by expert witnesses. He wrote and traveled extensively; he was the author of over 700 articles and 60 books in the field. He founded two journals in the field of dermatopathology: The American Journal of Dermatopathology, and Dermatopathology: Practical and Conceptual. He trained hundreds of fellows in the United States and internationally over his career of almost 40 years. (bio by: Mark Albert Hurt, MD)
