Mercy Camp’s stepfather, Miles Merwin, named her in his will, dated 18 May 1695 (New Haven District Probate, 2:189–91). In her nuncupative will, taken 3 March 169[7/]8, Mercy’s mother, Sarah [Mrs. Miles] Merwin, left “my wearing Cloth[e]s halfe to my son[-in-law] Samll Campe of Milford, the other halfe to be equally divided between . . . Mercy Beard & Bethia Pettit” (ibid., 2:217–18, 225–26). Samuel’s half was presumably meant for his wife, Mercy, whom it may be inferred was then still living—but not for long: Samuel Camp married second, almost certainly at Milford in 1699, Martha (Ufford) Carrow, whose first Camp child, John, was born in Milford 1 March 1699/1700.
The widely held belief that the maiden name of Mercy's mother was Youngs has been convincingly refuted (see James Raywalt, “The Identity of Sarah, Wife of Daniel Scofield and Miles Merwin – Still a Mystery,” _New England Historical and Genealogical Register_ 152[1998]:179–83). Evidence has since been presented suggesting that Sarah's maiden name might have been Graves (see Frederick C. Hart Jr., _Ancestry of William Weed of Stamford and Darien, Connecticut_ [Broomfield, Colo., 2009}, 24–25).
