MRS. ETHEL STEWART DIED SUNDAY, OCT. 17
Mrs. Ethel Stewart, 74, died Sunday, Oct. 17, at 4:15 p.m. at the Ray County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Stewart was born March 14, 1891 in Portland, Mo., the daughter of Asa and Hermenia (Illig) Matteson.
On July 11, 1915, she was married to Lawrence Stewart of Jefferson City. He preceded her in death in 1961.
Surviving are: one son, Lawrence Stewart, Excelsior Springs; one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Copenhaver, Lawson; one brother, John Matteson, St. Charles, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Bell Garriott, Fulton; Mrs. Viola Moore, Kansas City, Mrs. Anna Mae Werner, St. Louis, and Mrs. Eunice Dewey, DeSoto, Mo.; six grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 2:30 Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Lawson Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Morris officiating. Burial was in Lawson cemetery. -Lawson Review, Thurs. Oct. 21, 1965

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Lawson, Mo., for Mrs. Ethel Matteson Stewart, a native of the county, who died Sunday. She was born near Portland on March 14, 1891.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wilma Copenhaver of Lawson; a son, Lawrence Stewart of Excelsior Springs; a brother, John Matteson of St. Charles; and four sisters, Mrs. Eunice Dewey of DeSoto, Mo., Mrs. Anna Werner of St. Louis, Mrs. Viola Moore of Kansas City and Mrs. Belle Garriott of Fulton. MRS. ETHEL STEWART, FORMERLY OF PORTLAND, DIES AT RICHMOND, MO.
Mrs. Ethel Hermena Stewart passed away Sunday, October 17, at 4:25 p. m. in a Richmond, Mo., hospital from complications of several ailments.
Mrs. Stewart was born March 14, 1891, on a farm near Portland. She was the daughter of the late Hermena Illig Matteson and Asa A. Matteson. She spent her childhood in the Portland community and came back to visit many times after she moved away. Her home for several years had been at Lawson, Mo.
She was married to Lawrence H. Stewart on July 17, 1915, and he preceded her in death. To this marriage three children were born, Gernelle, who died at the age of 10 weeks, Wilma Fay Copenhaver of Lawson, and Lawrence H. Stewart, Jr., of Excelsior Springs. Besides the two children she is survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Viola Moore of Kansas City, Mrs. Belle Garriott of Fulton, Mrs. Eunice Dewey of DeSoto, Mrs. Anna Mae Werner of St. Louis, and Mrs. Mabel Van Kirk of Warrenton; and five brothers, John Matteson of St. Peters, Paul Matteson of Portland, Arthur Matteson of Mokane, Francis Matteson of Fulton and Russell Matteson of Alton, Il.; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Lawson Presybyterian Church. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. in Lawson and burial was in the Lawson Cemetery. -Mokane Missourian, Thurs. Nov. 4, 1965
