OBITUARY:
MARY P. MURPHEY DIES THURSDAY
Was 85; Had Lived In Macon County 82 Years, Knew Abraham Lincoln
Mrs. Mary P. Murphey, 85, a resident of Decatur for 82 years, died at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in her home, 825 West North street. Her death followed a protracted illness.
Mrs. Murphey had been a member of the Young Women's Christian association in Decatur and had been a member of the Women's club in Decatur for many years. She was one of the few Macon county residents of this day who knew Abraham Lincoln.
Mary Wyckle was born April 17, 1844 in Greenville, Tenn. She came with her parents, Joseph and Margaret Wyckle to Macon county in 1847. Her father owned the farm where the Macon county fair grounds is today. He was a very prominent man in civic affairs and Wyckle's switch was named for him. Miss Wyckle grew to young womanhood on the Macon county fair ground farm, and she married there to Martin T. (P) Murphey, a macon county pioneer, on April 9, 1863. Her husband died June 22, 1896.
She leaves two children, Joe Murphey of Decatur, and Mrs. Louie MacDonald of Houston, Tex., who was at the bedside at the time of her mother's death; three grandchildren, Robert J . Murphey, Mrs. Mary Thompson and Miss Margaret Murphey, and by one great grandchild, Miss Myram MacDonald.
Funeral services probably will be conducted Saturday afternoon in the Dawson & Wikoff chapel. Friends may call at the chapel Saturday.
