Graduate of Harvard College in 1759, he was a pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Edgartown, Mass, ordained 11-25-1761.. His parish register was later printed in the New England Historical and Genealogical Society Register. Samuel was one of the townspeople known to have distributed food and provisions brought by the "Phantom Ship" during the American Revolution .He had a very successful pastorate which lasted until he died of Smallpox at age 42. He and Jedidah Sumner were married in 1763 by Rev. George Dunham of Tisbury, Mass. He was buried in the Old Burying Ground.
Banks History of Martha's Vineyard says that he was the last victim of that disease [smallpox] which had existed in the town for some time.
