Doris Gibson Parra del Riego

Social Reformer, she was the founder and editor of the Peruvian weekly newsmagazine “Caretas.” Born in Lima, Peru, her father was the British poet, Percy Gibson. She married an Argentine diplomat, Manlio Zileri, and their son, Enrique Zileri, went on to become an editor on “Caretas” as well, although she divorced Zileri a few years later. Gibson started “Caretas” in 1950 with just 10,000 soles given to her by her uncle, a typewriter and a single room. The newsmagazine was soon closed down for the first time by the military dictatorship; the paper would be closed down by various Peruvian governments a total of eight times.
