Husband of Mary (Roberts) Sheffield and son of Isham R. Sheffield and Martha Rice (Lane) Sheffield.
Isham O. Sheffield enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Miller County, Georgia as a Private in Company E, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops on 8 October 1861. The muster roll dated 8 April 1862, last in file, shows him present. He mustered out in April 1862, and later enlisted as a Private in Company E, 55th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry on 3 May 1862.
Private Sheffield was captured by the Union Army at the Battle of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, on 9 September 1863. He spent most of the rest of the Civil War as a Prisoner of War (POW) at Camp Douglas Union POW Prison in Chicago, Illinois. He was paroled at Camp Douglas, Illinois, and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland for exchange on 20 February 1865. Private Sheffield was admitted to Wayside Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on 21 March 1865. He was put on furlough for 60 days on 28 March 1865, to return home to Miller County, Georgia, to recover. The Civil War ended before his 60 days were up.
