Albert was born to Martinus and Grietje (vanRooden) deJong in Black Oak Township, Mahaska Co, IA. He was raised on a farm there. He had 5 living siblings - Pieter Jacob, Arie Cornelius, Antonie, Gysbertje, and John. A brother, Arie, had died from the cholera on the way from the Netherlands to the United States.

Albert and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Pothoven were married March 3, 1892 by Rev. Jan Smit, pastor of the Third Reformed Church in Pella, IA. They had one son, Martinus J,. born April 8, 1893. In 1895 they were living on the Martinus deJong family farm and Albert's mother was living with them.

Albert had consumption (tuberculosis), so he moved his family to Prairie View, KS, probably in the spring of 1898 where the climate was drier. His conditioned improved noticeably at first, but eventually his body was ravaged by the disease and he died. His wife, son and her brothers transported his body back to Pella for burial.
