Daniel was the third of four children born to Daniel and Mary Ann Oakes. He worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company as a laborer for more than 30 years.

He married Johannah Koch at Moosehead, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on September 28, 1893, and the marriage was performed by Rev. Herman H. Bruening. The couple raised nine children: Mary, Frances, Pearl Pauline, Hannah, Cora May (my grandmother), Eleanor Lillian, Julia, Clara Elsie, and Daniel Gustav.
