Bernard Leo Ryan was born April 24, 1899 in Elwood, Indiana to Thomas and Anna (Horoho) Ryan. He married at the age of 21 to Bessie A. Wise, a daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Wise. They had two sons, Robert and John Thomas.
According to the book, "Howard County in the World War", Bernard enlisted in the Navy at Indianapolis, Ind., July 8, 1918, and was sent to the Great Lakes Station; then he was transferred to the rifle range at Zion City, Ill.; later with a company of sailors, he entrained for Norfolk, Va., and served as fireman on the U.S. SS. "Illinois." On Jan. 24, 1919, he received his discharge.
Bernard's oldest son was killed during World War 2. Bernard sought to have his remains returned for burial in Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo and finally succeeded in December 1948.
Bernard died at the age of 70 on November 28, 1969 in Kokomo and is buried in Crown Point.
