Titus enlisted in Co E, 20th Maine Infantry during the Civil War. He was promoted to Cpl, and 1st Sgt. He was later promoted 2Lt in Co K. After the war, he re-enlisted Pvt in the Regular Army and was posted in northeast Texas with Co. C, 20th US Infantry, at the army camp near Mount Pleasant. He was part of a detachment with two other soldiers and a Freedmen's Bureau agent that attempted to arrest the notorious Reconstruction-era desperado, Cullen M. Baker. During the ensuing gun battle, Baker fired a load of buckshot at Titus, killing him instantly.
