Edwin C. "Ted" Bassett, 76, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in the Powell Nursing Home in Powell after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 18, 1922, at Elk Basin, Wyo., the son of Edwin Appleton and Lydia Cozzens Bassett. At an early age he moved with his family to Southern California, where he grew up and attended schools.
He joined the Coast Guard in 1942 and served throughout World War II. He returned to Los Angeles, where he worked with his father in the ice production and delivery business.
He was well known for his boxing ability and fought many bouts in the L.A. and San Diego area. He later moved to Byron, where he met and maried Phyllis Snyder. They worked in the restaurant business for several years. Phyllis died Aug. 5, 1997.
Ted is survived by two sons, five daughters, a brother Matt Bassett, of Sanborn, Minn., and a sister, Orabell Shawley, of California.
Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Byron cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell was in charge of arrangements.
