Services for Ulysses "Jack" Arbter of Longview, will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2008, at Rader Funeral Home, with Father Bruce Lincoln officiating. Interment in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Arbter, known to his friends as Lefty, died Monday, December 8, 2008, in Longview.
Lefty was born on November 11, 1928, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., to John and Viola Arbter . He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and served in the U.S. Army as a research chemist during the Korean War. He worked as a metallurgical engineer at A.O. Smith, Morton Thiokol, and retired from Lone Star Steel. He was active as a Cub Scout leader and little league coach in the Spring Hill community. He was an avid painter and has several of his paintings on display at the Barksdale Air Force Base. He wasa member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Longview . He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joyce Arbter; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Jerry Baker of Longview; son, Capt. John Arbter, U.S. Navy; son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Rondi Arbter of Longview; grandchildren, Katie and Lizzie Baker of Austin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Jim Fink of Wickliffe, Oh.; Charlene and Mike Durvoka of Pueblo, Colo.; and borther-in-law Kent Martin of West Allis, Wis. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Grace Martin.
