John LeRoy Hanks is the adopted son of Gaylander Willis and Lelah Ann Whittington Hanks.
John L. Hanks, 66, of Gulfport, Miss., formerly of Decatur, died 6:35 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 3, 1987) in Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center, Biloxi, Miss.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Brintlinger's Funeral Home with burial in Macon County Memorial Park. There will be no visitation. Memorials: Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, St. Louis, or Elks Lodge 978 of Gulfport.
Mr. Hanks was born in Dawson, son of Joseph L. and Elizabeth L. Goben. He was retired from the U. S. Navy and Caterpillar, Inc. where he was a tool designer, a member of Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Gulfport, past commander of American Legion Post 105 in Decatur; American Association of Retired Persons; Gulfport-Joppa Shrine; Great Light Lodge 1064 AF&AM of Decatur, former trustee of BPO Elks 401 Decatur, Esteemed Leading Knight of BPO Elks 978 in Gulfport, past member of Ansar Shrine and Springfield Consistory, former member of the Oriental Shrine Band of Decatur and past president of the Decatur Shrine. He married Margaret Hodge.
Surviving are his wife; son, Craig A. of Paddock Lake, Wis.; daughter, Peggy J. Donaldson of Las Vegas; stepsons, Walter N. Connard of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Philip L. Connard of Dublin, Ohio; Ralph E. Connard of Lindenhurst; brother, William E. of Decatur; one granddaughter; 12 stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
