VALLEY PIONEER BURIED SUNDAY
A.L. Hale, known far and wide as Roe Hale, passed away at his home in Afton 1st Friday evening about 7:00 p.m. Roe was apparently in good health until about June 1st when he fell from a wagon and received injuries which terminated in his death last Friday.
Roe was born in Liberty, Idaho 63 years ago next December. He spent his boyhood days and early youth in Bear Lake valley.
His parents moved into Star Valley 48 years ago when Roe was only about 15 years of age. It was during the next few years that he got his real experience in pioneering.
There were only a few settlers in Star Valley and Roe did his full share in helping haul supplies into the valley. It was always a real thrill to hear him relate his experiences of these early days. When he was 20 years of age he married Eliza Yeaman, daughter of the late Thos. Yeaman, who still survives him, although her health has not been so good the last few years.
Roe filled a mission to the Central States about 37 years ago. He served the people as deputy sheriff for several years under sheriff Jones and also under Sheriff James of Uinta county before the division of the county.
He and Archiso Corsi carried the mail from Afton to Montpelier for 8 years, during which time he had many trying experiences, as the roads were very bad in the spring and fall of the year. On many occasions during the winter it would take two or three days to break through the deep snow from Afton to Montpelier.
During his later life he has served as deputy sheriff for Afton and district and has made an excellent record in that capacity.
He is survived by his widow, Eliza Hale, and the following sons and daughters; Louis, Everrett, Walter and Leroy, Mrs C.S. Wray and Mrs Jos Michaelson. Three children preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held in the North Ward chapel 1st Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The house was filled to capacity.
Services were opened by C.C. Leavitt. A.V. Call, L C. Jensen, President Clarence Gardner and Bishop F.R. Gardner were the speakers and each paid high tribute to the sterling qualities of the deceased, and the part he did in pioneering Star Valley.
S.B. Murray offered the benediction.
Roe was buried in the Afton cemetery.
Herman Hyde dedicated the grave.
A profusion of floral offerings were contributed by his many friends.
