Civil War letter written to Lovell's family from a fellow soldier:
November 3, 1864
In accordance to your wishes I send to you the sad account of your son, Lovell's death whiles fighting so bravely with his Captain, was shot dead instantly by the rebels.
He was shot by the prisoner that he had taken. After he had taken the prisoner and the prisoner had surrendered to him, Lovell stooped to pick the revolver up that was on the ground then the prisoner snatched the revolver out of Lovell hand and shot him through the heart. Our captain is going to write to you as soon as they decide about sending the body to you if they can they will.
It is a sad account and we all feel the lost of them. There was another shot at the same time. His name is Leach, lived on the prairie a little ways from Oswage. They was both brave soldiers and good ones. Lovell was appointed corporal of his company, but he as been on detached duty for sometime and unfortunately this time should fall one of the victims to the traitors of our country. We cannot tell when we are out fighting them which once of us is going to fall.
You son Lovell, has left behind him a character that will stand in our remembrance.
If they can send him they will but if not he will be buried here. We have brought him about 50 miles up to our camp and we have just got back from the scout. He was shot on 31 of October. I should have wrote before but I could not. So no more from yours.
Comp D 4th Ill
