Author, Historian. She was a writer of more than 30 fiction and non-fiction books for children and young adults. She is best known for her works focusing on African-American history, most notably the book "Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman" (1951). Born in New York City, she studied at Wellesley College and Barnard College, where she received a Bachelor's degree. During the 1940s, she worked for "Life Magazine" and later wrote her first book "Sophie and Her Puppies" (1951). Among her other books are "The Brownie Scout Mystery" (1955), "The Silver Spoon Mystery" (1958), "Mary Jane" (1959), "Secret of the Old Post-Box" (1960), "Tear Down the Walls!: A History of the Civil Rights Movement" (1968), and "It Started in Montgomery" (1972).
