WALTER MARSHALL SCHWARTZ '30
In the loss of Walter, the class lost one of its most distinguished and loved members, which surgery could not win. He had a most notable war and business career, and the class is very proud of him. In 1940 he bought himself a plane and learned how to fly it, as France fell. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force and fought in the Battle of Britain, following which he flew 40 missions in the first 10 days of North African desert warfare, where he won his first Purple Heart. Show down in 1943, he was held prisoner until Germany fell, at which time he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After heading Proctor Electric Co. until 1959, he guided the merger of it and its subsidiary, Proctor and Schwartz Co., with the Silex Corp., which he later merged into SCN Corp. under his directorship.
To his wife, Rosina, his two daughters, and six grandchildren, and to his sister, Lillian Pepper, the class extends its heartfelt sympathy.
