JOSEPHINE E. COCKRELL On February 21, 2005, of San Leandro passed from this life to life eternal. The daughter of Ella and Sigurdur Bjorgvin Eiriksson, Josephine was born Sept. 5, 1917, in the Icelandic community of Minneota, Minnesota. Josephine graduated from Illinois Women's College and taught school in Paris, Ill. She met Wayne Cockrell of Cody, Wyoming, in Yellowstone National Park, where they both worked summers. Married in 1940, Josephine and Wayne moved to Hilo, Hawaii, where Jo taught school and Wayne was a YMCA director. After Pearl Harbor, Wayne went to Naval Officers' Training School and was stationed back in Hawaii. Following World War II, Josephine and Wayne moved to Hollywood, California, and later to San Leandro, where Josephine taught at Washington Elementary School fro 15 years. They were members of High Street Presbyterian Church in Oakland and most recently First Presbyterian in San Leandro. Josephine was an active church member and served on various church boards through the years. Mrs. Cockrell was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elizabeth, and her husband, Wayne Cockrell. She is survived by her brother Ross Erickson of Billings, Montana, two sons, the Reverend Gary Cockrell of Kalispell, Montana, and Dr. Ronald Cockrell of San Mateo, California, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 180 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Flathead Lutheran Camp, 603 Main Street, Kalispell, MT 59901.
