Arthur Eugene Morehead Jr., 92, died at his home in Florence [South Carolina] Oct. 13, 2002. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Florence, with the Revs. Arturo Dalupang, Michael Corrigan and Thomas Pietila officiating. Waters-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery, at 2 p.m., in Newberry, with Whitaker Funeral Home assisting. Mr. Morehead was born in Memphis, Tenn., to Clorinda Vannucci and Arthur Eugene Morehead Sr. He is survived by his wife, Nelle Lipscomb Morehead. On Oct. 2nd, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with their children. "Buddy" graduated from the High School of Christian Brothers College in Memphis, and then graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he played football, lettered three years, was co-captain of the football team in 1933, and then was selected All State. A well-known USC fan, he proudly remembered that not only did Carolina not lose to Clemson in the four years he played there, but Clemson also failed to score a point. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the American Legion, as well as 40 & 8. While in Newberry, he was owner of Morehead Oil Co., that served Newberry, Saluda, Edgefield and Union Counties. Recognized as a leader in civic, church and community affairs, he served as President of the Lions Club, the Newberry Country Club, the Newberry Chamber of Commerce and the Cotillion Club. He was a member of the Advisory Board to the Newberry County School Board, the Newberry County Planning Commission, the Board of Directors of Southern Gulf Oil Distributors Association and the Political Affairs Committee, and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Newberry County Memorial Hospital. While living in Florence, he continued to remain a board member of Newberry Federal Savings Bank. Mr. Morehead was an active member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Newberry, where he was instrumental in its formation. Having moved to Florence from Newberry in 1991, he attended St. Anthony and St. Ann's Roman Catholic Churches. He will be missed greatly by all whose lives he touched. Mr. Morehead was predeceased by a sister, Ida Teresa Morehead, of Memphis. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Harriette Morehead Swearingen, and her husband, Skip, of Florence; two sons, Arthur Eugene Morehead III, and his wife, Elaine, of Florence, and Craig Whitten Morehead, and his wife, Trudy, of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Worth Swearingen, and his wife, Marianne, Arthur Reed Swearingen, and his wife, Angie, Nelle Swearingen Palms, and her husband, Lee, Arthur Eugene Morehead IV, and his wife, Christy, Anne Meree Morehead, Whitt Morehead, Mary Beth Morehead and Blakely Morehead; and six great-grandchildren, Deborah and Will Swearingen, Cannon, Mosely and Hallie Palms, and Benjamin Arthur Morehead. The family will receive friends in Florence, at the home of Gene and Elaine Morehead; and friends in Newberry, at Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence. (Published in The Greenville News 10-15-2002)
