Poet. She was a nationally honored poet, whom published in journals and authored eight books. Her writings included "Discourses on Poetry" (1972), "Poems by Black" (1973), "The Mystic Female" (1978), "Girl at the Window" (1991) and "Elegy for Etheridge" (2000). In 1967, she became the first African-American to receive a Doctorate degree from Louisiana State University. She was chairperson of the Department of English at Southern University, 1974 to 1986 and served as the first African-American Poet Laureate of Louisiana, 1989 to 1992. In 1984, she was recognized as most outstanding women for inclusion in the Women's Pavilion of the World Exposition and was inducted into the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame in 1991.
