Prettyman was the son of William and Olivia E Davis of Posey County, Indiana. When the family moved to Franklin County, Illinois Prettyman stayed behind and lived with his uncle Robert Montgomery. It was during this time Prettyman enlisted in the service. His father came back to Indiana for Prettyman and harvested crops and found out his son had enlisted. Since Prettyman was only 17 his father got him out of his enlistment. However, shortly after arriving in Illinois Prettyman enlisted again in Franklin County, Illinois, Company B of the 89th Infantry on 13 August 1862. The regiment was assigned to McCook's Corp and took place at the Battle of Stone's River in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Prettyman was part of the Railroad Regiment. He and other soldiers were guarding railroad cars when they were attacked by Rebel forces. Prettyman was wounded and died in Nashville, Tennessee on December 29, 1862.
