Bill was born June 22, 1921, in rural Warrick County, the only son of Lea and Velva Ashby. He attended Warrick County schools and graduated from Boonville High School in 1938.
In April 1942 he was married to Velma L. (Williams), his wife of 66 years. He was employed by Servel Inc. and later by Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company from where he retired in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was a member of Eugene Pate Post American Legion. He cherished his membership with the Masonic Order and was very active for many years. He was a member and Past Master of Reed Lodge No. 316 F & AM. A member and Past Commander in Chief of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Evansville and a 33rd degree Mason. He was a member and Past Potentate of Hadi Shrine and held honorary membership in many Temples in North America, a member of Swords of Bunker Hill and a Kentucky Colonel. He also served as Worthy Patron of Evansville Chapter No. 555 O.E.S. He served several years on the board of Directors of the Evansville Masonic Temple Association and at one time served on the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. Bill was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother and a sister, Dorothy Wires.
Bill is survived by his wife, Velma; son, Ronald D. Ashby and wife, Betty; two grandsons, Gregory Ashby and wife, Sandy, and Brian Ashby and wife, Julie; and five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Maxwell, Cooper, and twin girls, Ava and Reese.
Bill dearly loved his wife, Velma. He loved to spend time with his family. He was very proud of his two grandsons, Gregory and Brian. He enjoyed his five great-grandchildren so very much. They brought much joy to his life each and every day.
