Afton Man Dies Of Heart Attack While Fishing
Arthur "Doc" Dabel, local painter and former cafe operator died Sunday, June 24 of a heart attack while fishing alone on the Salt River near Thayne.
Mr Dabel had left home early Sunday morning for a day of fishing on the Salt River and didn't return that evening. Searchers were sent out Sunday night to look for him, and it wasn't until 5 a.m. Monday morning that he was found near the Oliver Haderlie ranch north of Thayne by his brother Marvin son Ronnie, and Danny Weeks, fiancée of his daughter, Linda Kay.
He had died on the bank of the river still gripping his fish pole firmly in his hand. The last fish he caught was still on the hook and in the water, when he was found. he died doing the one thing he loved best fishing.
Arthur august Dabel was born at Freedom, Wyo. May 4, 1908 the son of August and Sarah Snyder Dabel. He was the third child in a family of `16 children. His father, a sister and a brother and his first wife preceded him in death.
He spent the first 16 years of his life living at Freedom and had many happy memories of his boyhood days spent there. On Sept 22, 1909 he accompanied his parents through the Logan LDS Temple and was sealed to them.
In 1924 he moved to Afton with his family where he has resided ever since.
In his younger days he loved to play basketball and baseball and was very good at both, but he seemed more at home with a basketball in his hand. He was also a good trapper and each fall and winter he would have a good catch of furs.
He loved sports of all kinds and above all fishing. He was well known as one of the best fishermen in the valley. If there times when he couldn't catch a fish there was no need of anyone else trying.
Mr Dabel was known throughout the valley as a painter, at which he made a good living for his family. Just prior to his death he had been painting at Freedom.
He was well known in Star Valley as a cafe operator and a cook until 12 years ago when he retired from the business. He had operated three cafes in Afton. One was located where Fred's Cafe now stands another where the Western Auto store is now located and the other in the present building occupied by the Clothes Basket. He did all his own cooking.
When his father August Dabel operated a theatre in Afton Arthur often helped out by running the shows. He always seemed to be a big help to everyone.
He was married on Sept 4, 1931 to Annie Winons Ames. To them were born two children, a daughter, Joyce, Mrs Gerald Russell, Idaho Falls, and a son, John Duane, who was serving an LDS mission in Holland at the time of his father's death. John was released this week from his mission with four months remaining so he could return to his family.
Annie Dabel died in August, 1942. On March 5, 1943 Arthur was married to Byrel Thornton. To them were born five children, Dixie, Linda, Ronnie,, Nancy and Dirk all of Afton.
He is survived by his mother, wife, seven children, four grandchildren, his brothers, Marvin, Thayne; Junior, Norman, Cecil, and Vernon all of Afton; Ronald, Sunset, Utah; Robert Brigham City, Utah; and Floyd Ogden, Utah; and sisters, Mrs Ruth Pond, Laramie; Mrs Carl (Leona) Schwab Afton; Mrs Edward (Calpurnia) Knutti, Pocatello, Idaho; Mrs Sam (Verda) Helm, Smoot; and Mrs Gerald (Colleen) Windley, Salt Lake City; half brother, Bill Dabel Afton; and two half sisters, Mrs Esse Harmon, Fairview, and Mrs Hazel Weber, Provo, Utah.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28 at 1 p.m. in the Afton First LDS Ward Chapel with Counselor Lee R. Call conducting. Burial will be in the Afton Cemetery.
