BEST.--Mrs. Elizabeth Best died at her home, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, July 19, 1892. She was the daughter of James and Mary Lockart, and was born May 8, 1824 near Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She was converted when about thirteen years of age, and joined the Baptist church. She was married on July 5, 1849, to Dr. David Best, a man who attained eminence in his profession as a physician in the City of Meadville and throughtout northwestern Pennsylvania. Soon after her marriage to Dr. Best she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church to which he belonged, and in which she remained as a consistent member until the time of her death. Mrs Best became eminent among women as a wife and mother. She had a domestic nature, cared very little for society, and seemed always to prefer the quiet of her immediate circle of friends or the society of her own immediate family. She was a conspicuous example of devotion to her husband and children, to her church, and to her friends. She was a woman small in stature, but of remarkable physical endurance. One of her daughters, Mrs. Flora Best Harris, spent twelve years in Japan with her husband in missionary work. They are now located in San Franciso, and rendering a valuable service to the church among the Chinese of that city. Another daughter, Emma, is the wife of the Rev. Dr. J. W. Miles, Presiding Elder, of the Pittsburg District. Another daughter, Mary, has graduated in the medical profession and is now a practicing physician, and the wife of another practicing physician, Dr. Newell, of Chicago. The daughter Lizzie married a lawyer, who resides in Meadville, Pennsylvania. They have had charge of the old homestead during the last years of their mother's life. Miss Blanche Best, the youngest daughter of the family, bore an important part of filling the kindly office of the home during the last years of her mother's life, This daughter is a teacher of physical culture in Allegheny College and in the Meadville Conservatory of Music. The only son, Wesley B., is the present District Attorney of Crawford County, Altogether, it is an exceptional family.
