| Birth: | Dec. 25, 1832 Lyons Wayne County New York, USA | | Death: | Oct. 28, 1872 Lyons Wayne County New York, USA |  Civil War Union Army Officer. A civil engineer pre-war, he was involved in projects associated with enlarging the Erie Canal. After the Civil War began be helped to raise of company of infantry, which became Company B of the 27th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment. Commissioned its Captain and commander on May 2, 1861, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on September 1, 1862. At the September 1862 Battle of Crampton's Gap, Maryland, he was in command as the unit assaulted Confederate positions there. Less than a month later he was commissioned Colonel (October 4, 1862), and led the 27th New York until he was honorably mustered out on May 31, 1863. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
