Died, August 22, 1889, at the home of his parents, four miles northeast of Oregon, Master Lewis Kurtz, son of Isaac and Mary Kurtz, at the age of 13 years, 3 months and 10 days. The disease which suddenly terminated this fair young life was the locking of the intestines. Every effort was made to dislodge this most stubborn disease, save that of a surgical operation, which would have been attempted had the child survived till the surgeons reached there early the morning after his death.
At 9 o'clock Saturday morning, August 24th a large concourse of people assembled at the family residence to express their sympathy with the grief stricken family and pay their tribute of respect to the memory whom one had all learned to admire for his many noble qualities.
The services were held in the Nickell's Grove Church, conducted by the Pastor J.S. Mitten, assisted by Rev. T.D. Roberts, after which the remains were laid away in the Nickell's Grove Cemetery, to await the resurrection.
Out of a family of thirteen children this is the first breaking of the family ties by the messenger of death, and to know how strong which the band was bound this large and interesting family together one must needs have witnessed the deep grief of the entire family.
