Dick Atkins was the 1964 and 1965 BCRA Midget champion and had won the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" midget race at Ascot Park in 1965. Three weeks prior to his fatal crash, he had won the "Sacramento 100" Champ car race. Dick received fatal injuries in a crash that was triggered by Don Branson of Illinois hitting the first turn wall and flipping into Dick's car. Branson was killed instantly, and Dick passed away the following day.
