PORTRAITS & BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF HILLSDALE COUNTY MICHIGAN @ Library of Michigan, Lansing, says in part: "...Mary Berry, who was born in Seneca Twp. Ontario Co., NY on Jan. 22, 1829, ....married...Morton Meigs... in Reading Twp, Dec 19, 1850 at the home of the bride,..daughter of William and Mahala (Colwell) Berry, [who were] ...among the pioneer settlers of Reading Twp, coming to this county as early as 1836 from Maumee, Ohio, to which place they had removed from Ontario County, NY. William Berry ...the trade of a clothier, which he followed until 1834... [when he left] with his wife and 12 children, 6 by a former marriage, made his way westward to Maumee, Ohio, whence he came a year later to this county. Here his death took place in 1871...fourscore years [of age]. The second wife [Mahala]...died in early life, after removal to this county, when 39 years old. William contracted a third marriage, with Mrs. Deborah (Colwell) Hall, the sister of his second wife. She died in Reading Twp. in April 1887, when 70 years of age."
