New York, USA
|Death: ||Mar. 28, 1863|
Known as "Nelson" to the family but apparently used "J.N." on some records. Son of Henry & Lucinda (Watrous) Overy, New York-to-Ohio pioneers. Nelson was born c. 1832 in New York (give or take a year or two -- he had trouble giving the same age twice). He enlisted in the 47th OVI on 01 Jan 1862. He died of "rheumatism" in one of the General Hospitals in Memphis, Tennessee, on 28 Mar 1863.
Originally buried in the "Old National Cemetery at Fort Packering, Memphis, Tenn (Sec 1, Box 45)". The US Gov't opened the Memphis National Cemetery in 1866, in order to move the various soldier-burials to one location. There had been 11 "general hospitals" scattered around Memphis, and the gravesites needed to be consolidated. Our Nelson was moved to the Memphis National Cemetery, Section H, Site 4836. Fortunate that we know all this, because many (if not most) of the bodies were unmarked at the time of their removal.
Nelson left a widow, Sarah C. (Horin), from Brown County, Ohio. They didn't marry until he had enlisted (12 Jan 1862), and I don't know if there was a child.
