Rebecca Yoakum, Pioneer Merced Woman, Dies
MERCED, April 22 - Mrs. Rebecca Ann Yoakum, 91, who came to Merced fifty years ago, died to-day at her home at 912 Seventeenth Street, following a brief illness. Mrs. Yoakum had been in good health until a few years ago.
She was born in Green County, Mo., and came to California in 18__ with two of her brothers on the famous Butterfield Stage Line. The trip took twenty-one days. They first located at San Jose and in October, 1863, she married George W. Yoakum at Alamo. Her husband died in 1926.
She leaves four daughters, Mrs. C. M. French, Merced; Mrs. T. A. Mack, Los Angeles; Mrs. E. C. Cribb, Arcadia, and Mrs. Forest Routt, Marinez, and two sons, George and Alvin Yoakum, Merced. She also leaves nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Yoakum was one of the pioneers honored at the Covered Wagon Day celebration last October.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Presbyterian Church, with Rev. David McMartin officiating. Interment will be in the family vault in the Masonic Cemetery.
