Louis J. Kogut was born in Salem, Mass., on June 19, 1913, a son of Felix and Caroline Stansanski Kogut. He was graduated from high school and attended the University of Alabama. He also served in the Army during World War II.

In 1946, he founded the ABC Sign Co. in Watertown and operated the business until 1959. He and his brother, Theodore, then operated the ABC Sign Co. in Utica until 1964.

Mr. Kogut also worked for a time as a salesman and neon sign maker for the General Sign Co., Carthage. He moved to Ogdensburg from Carthage in 1966 and started the ABC Sign Co. of Ogdensburg, specializing in neon signs, sign painting and billboard work.

On Nov. 19, 1966, he married Mrs. Sarah Downey Dodd at St. Mary's Cathedral. A previous marriage had ended in divorce in 1962.

Mr. Kogut was also an accomplished musician, having started performing as a young boy in Vaudeville shows in Watertown. He later played the flute, clarinet and saxophone in several prominent bands in the Utica area, and also performed for many well-known personalities, such as Buddy Epson, Tony Bennett, Don McNeil and Mickey Rooney.
