He was struck by lightening while horseback riding and was never quite well thereafter. The saddle had a hole in it and the horse died following the incident.
Death notice from The Cabool Enterprise 12 January 1956 edition:
Addison Altis, 78, of Houston died at his home Sunday morning after a long illness.
Mr Altis was a member of an old Texas County family. He was born and raised on a farm north of Cabool.

ADDISON W. ALTIS
Son of Sam and Harriett Altis was born near Redwood, Virginia, October 21, 1877, and died at his home January 8, 1956, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 17 days.
He was married to Elsie Sigman, September 1, 1901. To this union were born 8 children; four daughters and four sons.
Mr. Altis professed faith in Christ and united with the Hamilton Creek Baptist Church when a young man. Later moving his membership to New Hope Baptist church, where he served faithfully as a deacon for many years. The he moved his membership to the First Baptist Church of Houston, where he attended faithfully, as his health permitted.
Mr. Altis has been in failing health for seveal years, and the end came last Sunday morning when he slipped away to be with jesus.
He leaves to mourn his homegoing; His beloved and devoted wife of almost 55 years. Seven children: Esther Lilly, Blanche Mueller, and Fern Fogg of Houston; Beulah Thieman of Higginsville, Arvil Altis of Solo, Mo., Ray Altis of Independence, Mo., Ernest Altis of Houston; (Lloyd Altis preceded his father in death.)
Three sisters and four brothers: Betty Lemons; Ezra, Willard and Paul Altis of Kansas City, Mo.; Ada Schoor of Ventura, Calif.; Dan Altis and Mary Crossland of Cabool, Mo. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
Mr. Altis was a beloved husband and father, and devoted to his family and home. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.G. Walker, Tuesday 2:00 at the First Baptist church in Houston with burial in the Houston cemetery under direction of Elliotts of Houston.
