In his early working career, Mr. Joannette was employed at Dupont of Canada for two years. He then worked for Norwood-Norfolk Central School from 1958 to 1960, for Lake Placid School District from 1960 to 1962, at American Motors of Canada in Montreal, Quebec, from 1962 to 1964 and at Xerox of Canada in Montreal from 1964 to 1968. He became a business and special education teacher at Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1968, working there until his retirement in June 1992.
He played varsity hockey for four years at Clarkson College, Potsdam, and semi-professional hockey in Montreal, and was a hockey official for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. He also worked as a French language interpreter for local and county court systems for several years.
He was previously married to Mary McGee of Potsdam.
