SENECA Francis L. Wessel, 71, Seneca, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at a Seneca hospital.
Mr. Wessel was a farmer, stockman and a dairyman in the Seneca area. He served in the Army in Greenland as a surveyor.
He was born Sept. 23, 1928, on a farm southwest of Kelly, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Macke Wessel. He attended St. Bede's School in Kelly, and he earned a general education development certificate while he was in the army.
Mr. Wessel was a lifetime member of St. Bede's Church at Kelly. He also was a member and on the board of the American dairymen. He was past president of the Nemaha Valley Unified Scool District 442 School Board, past grand knight of the K of C, Council No 1769, the Fourth Degree and a member of the Earle W. Taylor Post No. 21 of the American Legion, all in Seneca.
He married Luella F. "Ellie" Gellhaus on April 18, 1953 in Kelly. She preceded him in death Nov. 20, 1998. Mr.Wessel also was preceded in death by a son, Joseph, Jan. 2, 1955, and a grandson, Scott Brown, Feb. 16, 2000.
Survivors include five sons, Bill Wessel, Council Grove, Don Wessel, Spring Hill, Randy Wessel, Tecumseh, Bruce Wessel, Burlington, and Mark Wessel, Seneca; three daughters: Amy Gyhra, Pawnee City, Neb., Rana Culp, Shawnee, and Tonya Womack, Vassar; three brothers: Albert, Seneca, and Andrew and George, both of Corning; two sisters: Mary Korte, Kelly, and Rita Stuke, Seneca; and 20 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a. m. Thursday, at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
