Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. Born in Livonia, New York, he later moved to Ohio and settled in Cincinnati. When the Civil War began, he volunteered to serve in the Union Army and was mustered into service on June 18, 1861 with the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Company C as a Corporal. Backus was reduced to a Private on October 1, 1861 and later received a disability discharge on February 6, 1862. He returned to Cincinnati and later died there at his residence in 1888 when he was 54 years old.
