Husband of Harriett L Gardner, the daughter of Frederick Gardner and Sarah Wiggins. They were married on 20 May 1863 in Utica, Oneida, New York, just a few days after he was discharged from the Civil War after two years of service. They had nine children; Sarah, Lydia, Elwood, Joanna, Harriett, William, Jessie, Gardner and Lula Ophelia.

After Harriett died in 1896, William married again and had another daughter.
