Charles Laas became a prosperous farmer and merchant in Austin County, where he continued to reside until the year 1894, when he married his second wife and thereafter made his home at Greenvine in Washington County. At the time of the Civil war he became a loyal soldier of the Confederacy. His first wife Christiana passed the closing years of her life at Shelby in Austin County. She was the mother of eleven children. On April 3, 1894, Charles Laas married for his second wife Mrs. Marie Seidel Bartels, a daughter of Ernest and Wilhelmine Seidel. Charles Laas and Marie had two daughters, Mary and Dora Laas.
After a long and happy life with two wives and family Charles Laas, who lived successively in Austin County and Washington County, died in Greenvine in the latter county November 16, 1899. He was buried beside his first wife in Shelby, Austin County on November 20, 1899.
