Joseph married, at Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, September 27, 1764, Mary Peters (1744-1826) by whom he had 12 children: Mary (Molly) (b. 1765), Eunice (b. 1767), Sarah (b. 1769), Lydia (b. 1771), Joseph (b. 1773), Susannah (b. 1776), Phoebe (1778-1778), Heman (b. 1780), Loton (b. 1782), Phoebe (1784-1854), Lucinda (b. 1786), and Tencey (b. abt. 1790).
Joseph, his wife Mary and infant daughter Mary (Molly) arrived at Thetford (now in Orange County, Vermont) on March 3, 1766. In a 1771 Province of New York Census, Joseph was listed as one of twenty-nine heads of families then at Thetford, Glouchester County, New York (now Orange County, Vermont).
Joseph served for 12 days as a Private, along with his brothers Sergeant Elihu and Private Aaron, in Captain William Heaton's (Thetford) Company of Vermont Militia from August, 1780 to April 1781, in the alarm at Royalton and twice to Newbery. In October 1780, an enemy force (British and their Indian Allies) raided Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont, burnt the town, and captured a number of people and carried them to Canada. References:
