| Birth: | Oct. 4, 1918 New York New York County New York, USA | | Death: | Nov. 14, 2008 Ann Arbor Washtenaw County Michigan, USA | Medical Pioneer. He was a cardiac surgeon who performed the first American heart transplant, and invented several devices to improve the lives of patients with heart disease. Raised in New York City, his physician father encouraged him to persue a medical career...he graduated from New York University in 1940, and received his M.D. from Long Island College of Medicine in 1943. After two years service as a battalion surgeon in the Army, he practiced surgery at Montefiore Hospital, in the Bronx, from 1948 until 1955, then moved to Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Over the years, he introduced a number of inventions that prolonged and improved the lives of people with cardiac disease...the implantable pacemaker in 1962...the intra-aortic balloon pump in 1967...the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) in 1972; the last-named allowed patients with chronic heart failure to leave the hospital. It has since been used on about 3 million individuals. On December 6, 1967, at Maimonides, Dr. Kantrowitz performed the first heart transplant in the United States (Christian Barnard in South Africa was ahead of him by three days); though his infant patient lived but six hours, he had paved the way for a now common procedure. Dr. Kantrowitz, with his entire team, moved to Detroit in 1970...he maintained his surgical practice at Sanai Hospital, and was professor at Wayne State University. He received a lifetime achievement award from the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs in 2001. Though officially retired, Dr. Kantrowitz continued research into new cardiac assistance devices.
