Presidential Cabinet Secretary, Diplomat. He graduated from Weber College in 1928 and served a two-year mission for the Mormon Church. He then attended George Washington University, earning a masters degree in 1935 and a doctorate in 1937, and completing in 1939 a course at Rutgers University's Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He then began a career with Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust, where he rose to Chief Executive. Kennedy served as an assistant to Eisenhower-era Treasury Secretary George Humphrey. In 1967 President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him Chairman of the Commission on Budgetary Concepts, and the panel's recommendations were adopted for the federal budgeting process. Upon taking office, President Richard M. Nixon named Kennedy Secretary of the Treasury and he served from 1969 to 1971. From 1971 to 1972 he was US Ambassador at Large for Foreign Economic Policy and from 1972 to 1973 he was Ambassador to NATO. In 1976 he founded the US-Taiwan Business Council, serving as Chairman until 1990. He also served as a Special Representative of the Mormon Church's First Presidency, negotiating with government and ecclesiastical leaders worldwide. Brigham Young University's Kennedy Center for International Studies is named for him. (bio by: Bill McKern)
