Baldwin of Marietta, granddaughter Shelley Scott Garrett of Atlanta, brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George W. (Evelyn) Johnson of Roswell,
sister Eleanor Johnson Eldredge (Mrs. Paul Eldredge) of Baton Rouge, LA, in-laws Vachel D. and Margie C. Whatley of Lithonia; Thelma Beasley of Miami and Daisye Hulsey of Covington, nine nephews and three nieces.
Isabelle Johnson Whatley was born October 25, 1917, to William T. Johnson,Jr. and Evie Lee Downs, both of Bowdon, GA and later residents of Atlanta, GA. Themselves children of Georgia pioneers, they were parents to three children, of which Isabelle was oldest. She graduated from Atlanta's
Girls' High School, Class of 1935, whose members have stayed in close and caring touch through the years up until the current day. Isabelle knew she would be a nurse from age 10 and attended the nursing college at Georgia
Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, proudly receiving her R.N. degree in 1938.
Later that same year, she married her high school sweetheart, Sam Whatley, who in earlier times had also been the family paper boy. As Sam built his career in the railroad industry, Isabelle graciously created homes for her
growing family during their long marriage of over 62 years, residing in Atlanta, North Carolina, Kentucky, District of Columbia and Ohio, coming back to live in Marietta upon retirement in 1980.
In each of these locations, she did private duty, doctors' office and hospital nursing, earning a special place in the hearts of patients for her dedicated care.
Isabelle had been baptized at age 12 in 1929 at Grant Park Baptist Church; in turn she belonged to Kirkwood Baptist in Atlanta; Highland Park Baptist in Louisville; in Washington, Wisconsin Avenue Baptist, and in Cincinnati, Green Hills Baptist, and then Sam and Isabelle joined First Baptist Church of Marietta.
She was of a generous and hospitable nature, and always helped her neighbors with her nursing skills when needed.
(Add story of lady on fire)
Throughout her life, she preserved an open, cheerful perspective, and met all situations with serenity and composure. Blessed with considerable beauty, she took quiet satisfaction from the devotion of her husband and family which were always at the center of her concerns. She was brave and sweet spirited, with the courage of her convictions.
