John entered the American Civil War on August 4, 1862 from New Liberty, IL at age 18. He was 5 foot 5-1/2 inches tall with sandy hair and blue eyes. He joined the 29th Illinois Infantry - Company H, as a corporal and was mustered out as 1st sargent, at Hempstead, TX, commissioned 2nd Lt.

At the battle of Ft. Blakely, AL, he lost the sight of his right eye because he was so short he couldn't stand in the ditch to fire his rifle and was laying on the bank behind loose dirt, shooting from behind it. A ball from the enemy's gun hit the bank of loose dirt, putting his eye out.

Most of his children were connected with (or married to spouses working for) the I.C.R.R. (Illinois Central Railroad).
