John J. Hughes was born Oct. 15, 1919, in Buffalo, son of John B. and Helene Aggart Hughes , he was educated in Buffalo and attended St. Bonaventure University, Olean, one year. He served with the 3rd Army under Gen. George S. Patton in World War II, and received two purple hearts. He was discharged as a captain.

He married Iva Akin July 3, 1943, in St. Mary's Church. He and his wife were in the military at the time of their marriage. After the war, they returned to Buffalo where they lived until 1951.

The couple lived in Florida for two years before coming to Ogdensburg in 1953. Mr. Hughes was employed by the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center for 28 years, retiring in 1981. He worked in the physical therapy department, the rehabilitation department, and as a switchboard operator.

He and Mrs. Hughes had lived lived at their present address since 1956.

Mr. Hughes was a communicant of St. Mary's Cathedral, and was a member of Monsignor Charbonneau Council, Knights of Columbus, serving as a grand knight, a 4th degree knight, a faithful navigator, and state deputy.

He was a life member of the Ogdensburg Veterans of Foreign Wars post and the Loyal Order of Cooties of the V.F.W. He was also a member of the American Legion.
