Ira was the son of Asahel Griswold Kilbourn and Sophia R Elmore. He married Azuba Amanda Gaukel in 1855. They were the parents of Ida, Katie, Jay M #8785946, Byron Kenyon, Willie 1881, and Clarence Publius. After his wife's death, he married Phebe Titus Potter on 30 September 1897 in Blackhawk county, Iowa.

May 29, 1913 - Iowa City Daily Press - Sad news from Long Beach, Cal., announces that Rev. I.B. Kilborne was one of the 37 killed in the terrible acident there. Mr. Kilborne was fatally injured and died not long after the tragic fall on the doomed structure.

He was 85 years of age and could not recover from the shock and injuries, although a younger man might have lived, despite the hurts. The aged clergyman wiil be remembered by many Iowa friends, especially among the pioneers. He was pastor of the Haddock memorial church at Sioux City 22 years ago, but retired to go to California to live shortly after the new century was born.

His son and his late daughter-in-law, Dr and Mrs Dr. Jay M Kilborne were former Iowa City folk. The son was graduated here from the college of Homeopathic medicine in 1894 and has practiced since in Sioux City. The deceased daughter-in-law was graduated from the same class. She will be recalled as Adelaide E Cornwall.

The remains of Mr Kilborne will be brought to Iowa and interment will be made at his old home town, Smithland, Iowa.

Sept 26, 1913 - Waterloo Evening Courier - Mason City, IA Sept. 26. — Telegrams received here this morning announcing the death at Long Beach, Cal. of Ira Benedict Kilborne. His death resulted from injuries received in the collapse of a pier at Long Beach last May.

Mr. Kilborne was 85 years of age and had been a minister in the Methodist church for 60 years, most of that time being spent in the Northwest Iowa conference.

Sept 29, 1913 - Rev. I.B. Kilborne, who died last week at Long Beach, Calif., was 85 years of age. His death was caused by injuries received in a fall last May when the government pier collapsed. Deceased was the father of B.E. Kilborne, former I.C.R.R. agent at this place.
