John was mustered into the Union Army as a private in Company E, 18th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. At war's end, the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry were consolidated to form the 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry. John was mustered out with Company E, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry on October 31, 1865.
John was a farmer. He married Hanna Rustay at Hollenback Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 28, 1847. John Fenstermacher, Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony. The couple raised ten children: Anna, Jacob, Frances, Emma, Myles, Elizabeth, John, Mathias, Franklin Eugene, and Addison.
John filed for his Civil War pension on August 7, 1890.
