Rufus Rector, 82, of Millville died Saturday morning, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland, where he had been a resident and in declining health for the last year and a half.

Predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Harriet F. (Baitinger) Rector, in 2001, he was born in Clyde, N.C., and was the son of the late Golah and Ollie Rathbone Rector.

He was raised in North Carolina and had been an area resident for most of his adult life and a resident of the same Millville address for the last 40 years. Mr. Rector was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He participated in the occupation and defense of Peleliu in the Palau Islands and also in Okinawa. He was extremely proud of his military service and always maintained a high level of patriotism. He was a mold maker in the glass industry, starting at Anchor Hocking Glass in Salem after World War II as an apprentice and later working for T.S. Wheaton and Wheaton Glass in Millville for more than 35 years until a medical disability forced his retirement. A member of the Central Baptist Church in Millville, Mr. Rector liked to hunt and fish and was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf at East Lynn Golf Club in Vineland. He was a former member of the Nabb-Leslie Post No. 82 of Millville and during the 1950s had been a salesman for "Baby--Tenda."

He is survived one son, James D. Rector and fianc?e Denise of Glassboro; two grandchildren, Jennifer Freeman and husband Tommy of Newport, Tenn., and Scott B. Rector and fianc?e Stacy of Millville; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Rector of Maybank, Texas, and one brother Billy P. Rector of Clyde. He was preceded in death by a son, Randall Gene Rector in 1977; four brothers, Jack, Sidney, Willis and Willard Rector; and one sister, Elsie Rector Nolan.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with the Rev. John Carman, interim pastor of the Central Baptist Church of Millville, officiating. The interment will be made at Greenwood Memorial Park in Millville.
